Getting ready for your Engagement Session is already nerve wracking. You’re trying to figure out When to Take Engagement Pictures, The Best Spots for Photos, and What to Wear For Your Session. You’re probably also worried about Engagement Photo Poses. After all, you’re not a professional model. Not to worry. We’ve made a list of all of our absolute Favorite Engagement Photo Poses and we’re sharing them with you! The Whimsical Engagement Photo Poses are literally how I begin every single session. That’s because this kind of pose helps me adjust and check my camera settings to make sure you look fantabulous in your photos as well as make some really darn cute photos for your gallery later. This pose reminds me of the old European clocks with the little people that would come out and kiss at the stroke of noon. You know the ones with the cute little dutch or german people. Typically, I pose my couple standing next to each other and slightly apart so they can lean in and kiss over held hands. It’s a great ice breaker while we’re getting to know each other and so cute! Another really cute version of this is holding the & symbol sign in between the two of you. We’ve also gotten creative with this shot by having one person look away or at the photographer while other looks at their partner. There are SO many adorable variations of this pose.
Embracing Engagement Photo Poses allow you to do what you like doing best…snuggling up. And there are SO MANY versions of this pose. You can embrace sitting down like our example photo or you can stand up. You can face each other and give a good squeeze or you can be like a couple of cute little spoons in a drawer and hug from behind. One of my favorites is to have the couple standing facing me with the groom hugging the bride from behind with a little forehead kiss…kind of like the engagement photo poses below…kind of..but not exactly the same. I like the groom’s arms wrapped all the way around her like he hasn’t seen her in awhile. Oh, did I mention this pose is really good for winter and early spring engagement sessions?
Okay so I’m going all in here on these engagement photo poses and reveal something personal. Personally…(see my lead in?) I LOVE getting kissed on the forehead so I love capturing these tender moments also. A forehead kiss is just one of those intimate moments that show the love and gentleness in a relationship. We reserve that type of kiss for only those that we feel the closest too. Forehead kisses can be captured with the couple facing each other or with the couple pretending to be that cute set of spoons again as pictured here.
Confused? I know it sounds so silly and it can be, but it’s one of the engagement photo poses and prompts I give to clients at almost every session. I especially love this pose because it loosens things up for clients that are feeling a bit awkward and aren’t sure how to pose. I’ll ask them to tell a secret or a joke or maybe even whisper something a little naughty in their fiancee’s ear. This always brings out genuine laughter and joy. It makes for a wonderful photo as well as lightening the mood and relaxing the couple so they enjoy their session more.
Holding hands is a really great way to begin your session if you’re not exactly sure of how you feel in front of the camera. It’s natural to reach for your loved ones hand when you’re feeling anxious, excited or really connected to them. It’s the first romantic connection most couples have. That thrill of the first time your hands touch in the box of greasy popcorn or over the table at a romantic dinner. I often ask my clients to think about those first exciting moments during our session to prompt the love and thrill in their eyes while I’m shooting. Those genuine emotions are the ones I want to capture for them.
When your photographer (hopefully me…wink wink) tells you to go nose to nose for engagement photo poses..they want to capture a little fun anticipation. Will they kiss? Will they embrace? Who knows? I do! Because I’m going to guide them onto the next moment. Well, sometimes the temptation is just to strong and those romantic cuties steal a kiss anyway. I don’t mind. But man those in between moments right before you head into that kiss are so packed full of emotion. I love it! I love you! You love each other! We sound like Barney…oy vey.
Going for a stroll during your engagement session lets your photographer capture movement during your session and brings it to life a bit. We like some of the candid moments as well. It helps to showcase your personalities and love story in a very real way that doesn’t feel posed, even if your photographer set the stage…so to say.
So, whether you’re on the beach, in a park or on a city street…take a walk! Hold hands and forget your photographer is even there. Don’t worry. We’re used to chasing our subjects. 😉
Okay so in reality the two of you are the star of the show..but the ring that got you here needs a few moments in the spotlight as your supporting acting. I like to take in my surroundings and ask my couple why they chose their specific location. The couple pictured was hosting a winter wedding so they chose to take their engagement photos in the winter. So, the natural element to include in their ring shots were the snow. I also grabbed some photos with pine branches because the bride told me she loved the look. In addition to capturing the ring in the natural elements around us I also like to grab a few shots focusing on the ring while it’s ON the bride.
Not every couple loves these engagement photo poses. You’ve got to have a relationship where he picks you up often already. Otherwise they look staged and awkward and your friends and family are going to know you just picked it off a Pinterest Board. But, if he does swing. you around sometimes the joy that these lifting photos captures is just unreal. I LOVE it. It’s one of my favorites to do. The Air Lift photos allows me to back way up and capture a lot of the surrounding area as well. So, we can take what’s called an “Environmental Shot”. It means we’re documenting the environment as well as you…because it’s important to your story.
Oh yeah….pop that champagne. Hope you brought enough to share. I usually wait until the very end of the session to take these photos because they can get messy with champagne flying and spraying everywhere and I don’t want to get your outfit messy with sticky champagne. I’ll get myself ready for rapid fire on my camera so I can capture all of the shock and delight on both of your faces as that bottle pops!
